Colorado DOI Calls for Waived Waiting Periods and Flexible Housing Options for Evacuated Policyholders

Share:

CO| The Colorado Devision of Insurance Bulletin No. B-5.58 states that, in light of the June–July 2026 Colorado wildfire emergencies, insurers writing residential property policies in Colorado are expected to handle claims for displaced policyholders in a prompt, fair, and policyholder‑centered manner, including proactively evaluating all applicable Additional Living Expense, Loss of Use, and similar coverages whenever evacuations, access restrictions, utility outages, smoke/ash conditions, or other wildfire‑related circumstances prevent safe occupancy of the insured residence, making coverage available for mandatory evacuations without waiting for property inspection or confirmed damage, strongly considering ALE for reasonable voluntary evacuations (especially for vulnerable populations), waiving waiting periods, issuing advance payments, using direct billing, and accommodating a wide range of temporary housing and necessary living expenses—even where the full extent of physical damage is not yet known.
