Oklahoma Mandates Insurers Provide Building Code Coverage Regardless of Local Enforcement

Share

OK| The attached Special Notice from the Oklahoma Insurance Department, dated June 26, 2025, addresses all property and casualty insurers licensed in Oklahoma. It clarifies that insurers must provide additional coverage for increased costs due to the enforcement of any law or ordinance regulating demolition, remodeling, renovation, or repair of covered buildings. Importantly, this coverage must be applied regardless of whether local authorities are actively enforcing building codes.

  • Insurers are required to consider all building codes as being strictly enforced when providing additional coverage for ordinance or law-related costs.
  • Additional coverage for building code-related expenses must not be limited to situations where local authorities are actively enforcing such codes.
